Things to consider when playing A Million Dreams on piano

“A Million Dreams” is written in the key of G major. There are four quarter notes in each measure, which means this song is in 4/4 time. The piece begins with a repeating eighth note pattern in the left hand. It is important to keep your left hand light but precise for this section as it is building toward the melody, which begins in measure five. Play close attention to the fingering here. Using the correct fingers will help later on when you play with your hands together. There is some syncopation in this section that can be difficult to play at first. If you are having trouble, play the left hand part as is and tap the rhythm in the right hand. If you are using Piano Marvel, click the play button and refrain from trying to play along. Simply listen and take note of where notes fall and how it sounds. Listening is an extremely important part of playing music, don’t overlook it!

At the beginning of measure 21 the energy of the song increases. Here you should raise the loudness of your playing, but still, restrain yourself from playing too hard. We are building towards the next theme. At the pickup of measure 37 (specifically the eighth note before the measure) we begin the main theme. Here it is important to play passionately and with inspiration. However, always choose precision over power. You would be surprised at how small changes in dynamics make big impacts on the listener.

In measure 51, we return to the opening eighth-note pattern in the left hand. It is important to play it gently and remember even though the material is slightly different, it is mostly repeated from the first sections.
