Using the SASR with an Acoustic Piano
Piano Marvel now works on Android and iOS devices with microphone assessment. Download the Piano Marvel App from the App Store, log in, go to Sight-Reading, and start the test; select your level, and choose the Microphone option. You will be given a series of reading exercises to play through until you get 3 strikes. Click Finish for your SASR score. As of Jul 28, 2026, Acoustic Pianos work on iPhone, iPad, Android phones, Android tablets, and MacBooks that support Apps from the Apple App Store. The Piano Marvel web app for acoustic pianos with the microphone is not expected until mid-year 2027.
Connecting a Digital Piano to a Device
Connect your digital piano to a device with a USB cable or with MIDI Bluetooth. See the video below to see how simple it is. Piano Marvel works best connected to a digital piano or a MIDI-enabled acoustic piano, such as PNOscan or Yamaha Disklavier. The process is the same for connecting a digital piano to an iPad, iPhone, Android tablet, or an Android phone.
The SASR
Create a free Piano Marvel account at pianomarvel.com, and if you are a teacher, you can have your students create a free account and link to you as their teacher. Next, get comfortable with the platform by going to Method 1A #1, and play with the
Practice Mode and the Play Mode. After completing a few songs in Method 1A, go to SASR and click Start Test. When choosing a level to start, choose Intermediate or higher. If you fail twice, start at the Beginner Level. The Beginner Level has a different algorithm and can go excruciatingly slow unless you are a true beginner.
The SASR Growth Report
Use the SASR Growth Report to track your and your students' progress, if you are a teacher. You can also monitor your students,
classes, and organizations. This data can help you see how your students are progressing and guide you in improving sight-reading in your studio or organization. Watch the video below for details.
